Trust in Gardai, Civil Servants and Bankers trending upwards, but trust in each other is falling.

The Ipsos Veracity Index is the longest-running poll on trust in professions in Ireland, first measured in 2005, allowing the evaluation of key trends over time. The 2024 edition, conducted via nationally representative telephone survey, tracked the latest movements in public trust in key professions.

Though trust in some professions remains relatively unchanged over time – for example, healthcare professionals consistently top the poll – some professions have seen positive increases in public trust since 2019, with our five-year trend showing;

2019 vs. 2024:

  • Trust in Gardai up 9 points to 82%.
  • Trust in Civil Servants up 7 points to 74%.
  • Trust in Local Councillors up 10 points to 51%.
  • Trust in Bankers up 18 points to 45%.
  • Trust in Government Ministers up 8 points to 35%.

If we look back further to 2005, there have been some significant changes in trust levels over that 20-year period for the following groups;

2005 vs. 2024:

  • Trust in Gardai up 16 points to 82%.
  • Trust in Civil Servants up 11 points to 74%.
  • Trust in Business Leaders up 15 points to 44%.
  • Trust in Government Ministers up 12 points to 35%.
  • However, trust in our fellow citizen has fallen, down 8 points to 58%.
