Ipsos B&A conducted the 2024 Healthy Ireland Survey on behalf of the Department of Health, providing valuable insights into the nation’s health. This comprehensive study of 7,400 people aged 15+ offers a snapshot of how we’re doing as a nation, highlighting areas of progress and where further action is needed.
KEY FINDINGS INCLUDE:
Smoking: While overall rates have declined since 2015, the 25-34 age group remains a concern with a 20% smoking rate. The survey also explores quitting methods and the rise of e-cigarette use.
Alcohol: 73% of adults consumed alcohol in the past year. Binge drinking remains a concern, particularly among young men.
Weight Management: Based on self-reported data, 35% of the population are living with overweight and 21% with obesity. The survey explores weight loss methods and trends.
Physical Activity: While walking remains popular, overall physical activity levels decline with age, with a significant gender gap. The survey identifies key barriers to exercise.
Caregivers: A growing number of people (14%) identify as caregivers, with parent-carers facing unique challenges to their own health and wellbeing.
The Healthy Ireland Survey is not just about data; it’s about action. These insights will inform policy and shape interventions to create a healthier Ireland for everyone.
