Consumer confidence remains cautious, despite the economic mood being upbeat.

This wave of the Ipsos B&A Consumer Confidence Barometer was conducted from the 11th-17th June 2024.

Despite easing inflation and historically high employment numbers in the economy, consumer confidence has remained in the doldrums in June. While there has been an improvement of four percentage points since May (with confidence rising in most regions), our net rating is still -34 (those feeling downbeat versus those feeling more upbeat).  This is, however, the second month in a row where we have seen some positive movement.

Yet over half (52%) still expect the country to be worse off in the year ahead, with just 17% expecting the country to improve.

Confidence is lowest among females, and those from lower socio-economic groupings and those living outside of Dublin. The youngest age cohort (16-34 year olds) has become more downbeat more recently.

Half expect to save less in the coming year –with less than one in five (18%) being more positive. A similar number (49%)  think they will spend less over the next 12 months.

The proportion of households who claim to be “coping” with the cost-of-living crisis has remained relatively steady – 63% are managing vs. 65% in May. Over one in five (22%) state they are facing difficulties.

While the population are generally quite cautious this month, there is still a belief among many that their net worth (in terms of the value of their personal assets) will grow over the next year– 35% believe their assets overall will increase, with just one in five adopting a more negative outlook.

There are stark regional deviations at play – Dubliners are significantly more likely to have a brighter outlook towards their net worth compared to those living outside the capital.
