Meanwhile the Government, and Minister for Health Simon Harris in particular, seemed to be taken off-guard by the intensity of public reaction to the ownership of the new National Maternity Hospital by the Catholic Sisters of Charity order.

Despite numerous assurances that the hospital will in effect be managed at arm’s length from the religious order, people seemed to find it hard to accept at an emotional level, given the track record of the Catholic Church in Ireland regarding women and children’s rights.
