Consumer confidence is showing modest recovery after mid year declines
The modest improvement in consumer confidence is being driven by improved optimism among Dubliners, as the gap between Dublin and outside Dublin remains. However, those outside Dublin are also expressing some areas of improved confidence in the country’s economic future.
At countrywide level positivity towards the value of personal assets is showing a positive trend and is gradually trending upwards among both Dubliners and those living outside of the capital (most likely due to rising property value), but we are not quite at 2006 levels (yet!).

Things may well change significantly upon resumption of the Dáil and debate around the 2018 budget, but today’s findings will certainly give Fianna Fáil pause for thought as to when they might decide to withdraw their support for the current administration.

Dubliners are bracing themselves for the future
Dubliners have driven a decline in the high levels of optimism experienced during the first quarter of 2017.
The Dublin centred dip in consumer confidence which followed the Brexit vote has returned and Dubliners confidence in the country’s economic future has reduced considerably, versus early 2017 levels. Albeit, confidence has also reduced outside of Dublin but to a lesser degree.

A questionnaire has been developed for the business monitor which covers issues such as recent business results, projected employment levels, profit margins and expectations for the forthcoming year for the BDO Business Optimism Index.
