The 2011 Lundbeck Mental Health Barometer
The 2011 Lundbeck Mental Health Barometer, the sixth in a series, illustrates a growing acceptance of the prevalence of mental health conditions in Ireland, but a continuing and deepening unease about facing up to these when confronted by them in everyday life. An unusual facet in 2011, as the recession deepens, is an escalating view that depression is primarily a male and youth phenomenon, illustrating a heightened probability of a more simplistic (and probably incorrect) interpretation of depression and its causes. This also suggests that society may be less conscious of or sensitive to female and older experience of depression.
