Dubliners are bracing themselves for the future

Dubliners have driven a decline in the high levels of optimism experienced during the first quarter of 2017.

The Dublin centred dip in consumer confidence which followed the Brexit vote has returned and Dubliners confidence in the country’s economic future has reduced considerably, versus early 2017 levels. Albeit, confidence has also reduced outside of Dublin but to a lesser degree.

Consumer outlook at the start of 2016 was quite positive, however uncertainty over the make-up of the new Government, followed by the Brexit vote in June and a period of industrial unrest during the latter part of the year, are likely to have deterred confidence rates from improving as the year progressed.

As we approach the end of 2016, the two speed economy of Dublin vs outside Dublin is still apparent. The Dublin centred dip in consumer confidence following the Brexit vote has subsided and a widening in confidence between Dublin and outside Dublin is again evident (Dubliners are now three and a half times more confident about the economy next year vs. those outside the capital).

Despite improvements in employment rates and Live Register numbers falling sharply since the beginning of the year, consumer confidence has ‘bumped’ along at relatively low levels throughout most of 2016.

Ireland’s subtly improving GDP and GNP are not being reflected in consumer confidence, as consumers attitudes towards the economic outlook of the country has remained steadfast since the dip experienced post the Brexit vote. It should be noted that future confidence is lower now than compared to September 2015.

Societal Challenges Have Taken A Toll On Consumer Confidence

20/05/16

During the month of April uncertainty over the future make-up of the Government (amongst other societal challenges, especially in Dublin) appears to have taken a toll on consumers, as consumer confidence in the economy has fallen back slightly since February 2016, albeit still positive.

While all areas of the country remain positive towards the broader economic prospects, those living in Dublin, females and those aged 35+ years show the greater reduction in confidence.

While signs of optimism surround us on a macro level, consumers are still cautious and feel that their personal finances and ability to save will not improve during the oncoming year.

Macro-level indicators continue to shine light on Irelands’ recovery: the number of Live Register claimants has fallen, employment figures have risen and confidence in the economy looking forward has hit an all-time high.
